Book a Massage Support a Cause - Our Donation
Celebrating our anniversary with a donation in support of the animals
This September represented the eighth year anniversary for Wellness for the Body. What better way to celebrate than to support a wonderful and worthwhile charity.
Wellness for the Body donated $1 to The Oakville & Milton Humane Society for each one hour massage provided in the month of September.
Last week, our Clinic Director, Jennifer Lickver, personally handed over a cheque for $365. The staff and animals were very appreciative of our donation.

Most of us habitually seek out professional healthcare after we have experienced a painful event. A good number of my patients come in with complaints of pain. While this is understandable, I am truly delighted when someone comes in with questions on how to prevent illness and injury or improve performance. The reason for my excitement is two-fold. First, it means that the person is less likely to inflict harm upon themselves – a result of my ability to advise them of what NOT to do. Secondly, if and when they do get injured, they will be far more successful in their recovery. Rehabilitation, especially of the back and neck, is as dependent on your outlook and attitude as it is on the type of therapy you're receiving!
I would like to suggest that you come to see me once or twice while you are "feeling no pain." This may very well prevent the 12 visits you would have to come in for when something does go wrong! We can discuss your health concerns, fitness goals, healthy independent aging, transitioning into new periods of life (pregnancy, new jobs etc.) and ensure you are empowered to help yourself deal with what life is throwing your way.
As our life expectancy increases and more people work past the age of retirement, we need to plan ahead for our bodies the same way we plan for our finances. Starting good health habits early in life will keep you a step ahead!

Stressed Body, Take the Time

Because stress can affect your body’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors, being able to recognize common stress symptoms can help with managing them.
Stress implicates reactions within our body that can cause increased breathing, which becomes shallow and more rapid. This can result in an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, adrenaline and cortisol, decreased blood flow to the extremities and may impair digestive function and immune system activity. While preparing for the fight or flight response (defensive mechanism), the body continues to produce these symptoms until the situation has been resolved. At that time, the body will return to a normal state. Frequent stressful episodes may even cause a locked pattern of stress response (the inability to relax or ‘let go’) This type of pattern is damaging to the body and can escalate to the point of discomfort or pain. Long term effects may be high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.
Stress can affect the:
• Respiratory System
• Cardiac System
• Digestion System
• Endocrine System
• Immune system
Massage therapy is well known for being a major benefit in stress relief and achieving a healthier lifestyle. This is achieved by lowering the heart rate and blood pressure, strengthening the immune system, improving blood circulation, relaxing muscles and increasing endorphins within the body. Serotonin and dopamine are also released through massage. This leaves the body feeling relaxed making habitual, acute or short term stress easier to overcome. Increasing oxygen flow helps to rid the body of toxins, which may accumulate as a result of stress or tension. This will help the body revive and re-build itself. Taking care of the body is ideal for longevity and a happy life.
Exercise increases your overall health and sense of well-being. The benefits include endorphin release, which increase the brains feel-good neurotransmitters. Being in motion will distract the focus from irritations or concerns to focusing on the body’s movement and physical activity. This in turn will improve the feeling of calmness and clarity. Exercise can increase self-confidence and reduce the symptoms caused by long periods of depression and anxiety. It can also improve sleep, which is often disrupted by stress. Overall exercise and massage can aid in a individuals sense of control over their body and life.
• In October 2008 the journal Psychooncology published a study entitled, “Massage in patients undergoing intensive chemotherapy reduces serum cortisol and prolactin.” The conclusion of the study stated, “…a significant reduction in cortisol (stress hormone) could be safely achieved through massage, with associated improvement in psychological well-being.”
• In May 2008 The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry published a study entitled, “Pilot study evaluating the effect of massage therapy on stress, anxiety and aggression in a young adult psychiatric inpatient unit.” The study concluded that “Massage therapy had immediate beneficial effects on anxiety-related measures.”
