What is ‘Hot Stone’ Massage?

A specialized massage using heated stones placed on the body and in the therapist’s hands. The stones are placed in a hot water bath. The water and stones are then heated to 120-150F. Cooled stones are replaced as they are needed. The earliest known use of stones for healing was by the ancient Chinese medical practitioners. This form of therapy was re-discovered in 1993 by Mary Nelson of Arizona. She named it ‘LaStone Therapy.’

hot stone massageWhat type of stone is used?

The most common stones used are Basalt. When the lava from volcanic eruptions [mainly in coastal areas] cools, the stones are smoothed and formed by water erosion. Basalt contains a magnetic iron that helps insulate and retain heat. Its smooth, hard surface creates the perfect glide over sore, tired or aching muscles. Stones are selected in varying sizes and shapes for the different body parts.

How long is a Hot Stone Massage?

To provide the most effective treatment, we suggest a 1 hour (upper or lower body) or 90 minute (full body) treatment.

What are the benefits of Hot Stone?
