The Importance of a Mid-Day Break

Dr Caren Fortin DCTaking quick breaks to refuel and re-charge during our busiest days can help us avoid the negative effects of stress and keep our bodies functioning at their best. The Ontario Chiropractic Association (OCA) has some great suggestions to combat low energy levels during your day, listed below. To tailor these activities to your needs, talk to one of the chiropractors in our clinic - we are here to help you feel better, one small break at a time!

Here are some simple ideas from the OCA to help renew your energy throughout your busy day:

Lunchtime strolls
Shake it up and go for a walk during your lunch. A simple dose of fresh air can help boost your energy, clear your mind, and help you refocus. After all, studies show that lunchtime walks can “perceptibly — and immediately — buoy people’s moods and ability to handle stress at work.”

Exercise
Whether it be for 3 minutes or a half hour, exercising in the middle of your day will not only get rid of those midday blues but can help keep you active, along with all the other added health benefits working out gives us.

Eat
Putting the right nutrients into your body pays off for your mind as well! Eating a balanced meal gives your body the fuel it needs to keep your energy up and decreases fatigue.

By implementing any of these simple tips throughout your day, you will have the energy to tackle your daily tasks.

I have a few favourite ways to re-energize too! I suggest drinking a glass of water each time you get up from your desk, staying hydrated is great for your body and your mind. Getting a glass of water is also a good excuse to get up from that sitting position and stretch. Throw in 10 overhead arm reaches and 10 squats or marches on the spot and, ta-da, you push the reset button on your body to get you through another portion of your work day.

Why Self-Care is Your Homework

Sumi Tamang Page RMT Sometimes we hear massage clients say, “My massage therapist works wonders!” While your massage therapist is wonderful, the most important contribution to this outcome is the therapist and patient working together for the one goal: Wellness!

How often does our Registered Massage Therapist, Chiropractor, or Osteopath say, “Now you need to do these exercises/stretches at home,” but the next day we feel better and question “why should I do these exercises/stretches? I feel fine!” Then we don’t stretch and our muscles end up back to square one – painful and sore.

As Massage Therapists, we provide hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, specifically the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and joints, for the purpose of optimizing health. We also encourage relaxation through reducing the release of cortisol. More importantly, to improve the health of your muscles daily, it is your responsibility as a patient to actively stretch and strengthen your muscles as set out by your therapist.

stretchingIn its most basic form, stretching is a natural and instinctive activity that is performed by humans and many other animals, often accompanied by yawning. Stretching often occurs instinctively after waking from sleep, after long periods of inactivity, or after exiting confined spaces and areas. For instance, when you get out of bed in the morning or after sitting at your desk at work, you raise your arms in the air and bend your neck from side to side. It is a way of letting your body know that it’s time to move. When your body experiences pain because of knots (trigger points) in the muscle fibers or repetitive strain injuries, it is important to physiologically lengthen each and every muscle fibril in the muscle, and that takes a minimum of 30 seconds.

A muscle is made up of many strands and each muscle strand (fibril) shortens and lengthens to move the muscle as a whole. When you have a knotted muscle, the best remedy is to lengthen the muscle by stretching. If you do not stretch your muscles, your range of motion can become limited and increase the risk of injury.

So, remember that you have homework for a reason! Also, stay within your therapist’s guidelines when we encourage you to do exercises/stretching – overstretching can also cause damage. Can you spare 6-9 minutes out of your day? This amount of time is usually all it takes to perform a stretch or exercise 2-3 times a day! Make stretching a part of your daily routine to help maintain the good feeling and reduced stress you feel after a massage treatment.
