Welcoming Dr. John to Our Wellness Team

We are excited and please to introduce you to our new naturopathic doctor!

Dr John MacIntoshJohn MacIntosh is a licensed naturopathic doctor, registered massage therapist and one of the most experienced practitioners of Suikodo™ (a unique form of bodywork related to the Japanese therapy shiatsu) in the world. His practice is focused primarily on the management of chronic pain of all origins, particularly sports injuries, headaches and migraines, disc- and joint-related back pains, sciatic neuralgia, and generally cases in which other treatments have proven ineffective.

John graduated as a registered massage therapist, with honours, from Kikkawa College in 1996 and from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2003. He spent 13 years studying Suikodo™ with the man who discovered and developed it, Sensei Mitsuki Kikkawa, C.S.T., R.M.T., and has written about and taught Suikodo™ since 2002. He has also completed additional training in classical homeopathy. John was awarded the New Practitioner of the Year award by the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors in 2004.

John lives in Milton, Ontario, is married and the father of three energetic boys. He enjoys fishing, camping and outdoor activities.

What is Foam Rolling?

dr tara brownFoam rolling is a form of self-myofascial release (or self massage) to treat overactive or tight muscles. The technique is effective in releasing many different muscles of the body and is achieved by rolling the foam roller under or along the muscle group that is tender or tight. 

Foam rolling can be used by people of all fitness levels and is great for both a warm-up to exercise and also as a cool down. When used as part of the warm-up, it should be done before any cardio or other stretching. This warm-up activity will increase blood flow and reduce tension in muscles that might be tight from exercise the day before. When used as part of a cool down, foam rolling helps to flush out blood that has collected in a muscle during the workout. This flushing helps to bring fresh nutrients and oxygen to the worked muscle, therefore speeding up the healing and recovery process. 

The foam roll can also be used as a tool to increase mobility in the upper to lower back. By placing the roll at various locations in the thoracic spine (or mid back) it has the ability to help stretch and create movement in restricted areas of the spine. This activity is particularly great for those who remain seated throughout their workday. 

Here are the overall benefits of foam rolling:

  • Smoothening and lengthening muscles
  • Breaking up adhesions and scar tissue
  • Relaxing muscles by activating the sensory receptors connecting muscles and tendons
  • Improving blood circulation, therefore speeding recovery post-workout

Hi Everyone,

Dr Caren Fortin DCI am thrilled to be working at Wellness for the Body and excited to be back in Bronte after a few years away! I am looking forward to meeting all of you and helping you achieve your wellness goals. A bit about me: I’ve been a chiropractor in Oakville for almost ten years. I enjoy the puzzle of how to make a body function better after an injury. I try to practice what I preach; I speak about exercise, healthy eating, balancing life and work, and encourage taking time for you, including massage and chiropractic visits.

I have been very fortunate to have some wonderful patients under my care in my practice. I have treated pregnant women and infants, youngsters to the young at heart, athletes to office workers, and acute injuries to wellness/maintenance care. And I’m looking forward to taking care of you!

I’ll be at the clinic Tuesday evenings and Saturdays, so if you’re in the area, please pop by and say hello.

The 10 Minute Body Scan

Andrea Antaya RMTThis time of year I love nothing more than sitting in my backyard and enjoying the weather I longed for all winter. I have become quite good at multitasking since having my first child and this is what led me to incorporate a muscle relaxation exercise into any 10-minute period when I can sit outside. This exercise is basically a quick body scan that will help relax the muscles we tend to use more of this time of year when we become more active.

Begin by sitting or lying down in a relaxed position. While visualizing heaviness and warmth in the various parts of your body, say each line below. Once complete, repeat for as long as you wish, or for as long as time allows you each day.

Both arms are heavy.

Right leg is heavy.

Left leg is heavy.

Both legs are heavy.

Right arm is warm.

Left arm is warm.

Both arms are warm.

Heartbeat is calm and regular.

Breathing is calm and regular.

My abdomen is warm.

My forehead is cool.

 

I hope this helps both relax and restore you during these upcoming summer months! I look forward to also seeing you at the clinic, when your body says it's time to add in a therapeutic or relaxing massage.
