Happy New Year!

Andrea Nederveen RMTWow! It's January again. A new year...and always a new year’s resolution! My husband and I have been on a slippery slope in regards to all that is wonderful in the winter. The month of December has been especially lacking in all things that are good for our bodies. We work more, we eat more, we sleep less, we exercise…oh wait we do not do that at all! So here it is January - and there are no more excuses. My New Year resolution is to be healthy.

Today was my first workout of the year and I have a lot of work to do. I was sweating, I was winded and I have not been this sore in months. So my husband, being the wonderful man that he is, enlightened me with a new book that he has been reading. This book has a very unique title and it can throw you a little, however it has really helped him with his mobility and decreasing some joint pain.

The book is called: Becoming a Supple Leopard, The ultimate guide to resolving pain, preventing injury and optimizing athletic performance. By Dr. Kelly Starrett.

Dr. Kelly Starrett has his doctoral level education in physiotherapy and owns his own Cross fit gym in San Francisco. He has had the opportunity to work with many people and to encourage them in their abilities. In regards to our bodies he says, and I quote “You are an amazing, adaptable, healing machine.”

When you work out and do not have the proper movement, you can do your body a lot of harm. Another quote “98% of all dysfunction we see in a typical athlete is over-tension (missing range of motion) and open circuit faults (moving in a bad position).

I love that someone has taken the time to write a book that basically explains and shows us how to fix our bodies on our own. With all the visual aids in his book about how to increase your range of motion in each body part, and how to move in the proper positions, your work out should be a lot smoother and you should notice a decrease in pain and an increase in your abilities.

As massage therapists we always encourage our clients to come in for regular massage maintenance, to stretch their bodies and to be conscious about their posture throughout the daily activities. This is very sound advice. I am basically promoting this book today because a lot of the information found here is very complementary to what we as therapist are encouraging you to do when you come in for a treatment.

I would like to wish you all the best in this New Year. May it be a year full of health and wellness. I would like to encourage you all with your healthy resolutions, whatever they maybe.
