Scoliosis Check

Dr. Shima Shahidy, (Hon) B.Sc., DC
Chiropractor, Acupuncture & Graston Technique Provider

dr shima shahidyA recent patient visit reminded me how important it is to follow your instincts as a parent. Parents are familiar with how their children look, move and behave. When something seems different, it's important to take a closer look. You may be noticing that your child stands or walks awkwardly or there seems to be something off about their posture. If this is the case, it may be a good idea to have a health care provider check their posture and make sure there are no signs of scoliosis.

A very straightforward history and physical evaluation can determine if your child is developing scoliosis. While the most extreme curvatures and severe complications are rare, left unchecked, some cases of scoliosis can progress and cause pain and limit mobility as your child grows and later in adulthood. Early diagnosis will give the greatest opportunity for intervention!

If your child does have scoliosis, the time before and during puberty is very important. This is a period of rapid growth and if a curve is going to worsen, it will often happen during this time. For those who are at risk, an early diagnosis increases the likelihood that more conservative treatment options can be used first.

If it turns out that there is no problem at all, a posture check is an excellent time to discuss healthy habits with your child. As health care providers, we can be a great conduit to encourage them to start taking care of their bodies, being active and eating well. These habits, if started at a young age, are far more likely to become lifelong.

Prenatal Massage

Andrea Nederveen, RMT
Registered Massage Therapist

Andrea Nederveen RMTCongratulations, you are pregnant! As you embark on this beautiful journey of growing another human inside you, you will want to take charge of your health and the health of your baby. Responsibility has a whole new meaning when another life completely depends on you. You may exercise differently, eat healthier, possibly quit smoking or not have that 9pm glass of chardonnay.

As your hips change, ligaments loosen and you may begin to feel lower back discomfort and possibly leg cramps at night. Some women experience sciatic pain along with swelling in the legs and feet. This may all sound a little bit overwhelming but then isnít carrying a baby, getting kicked constantly and gaining 25lbs. enough already?

As a massage therapist and a mother of two I would love to encourage all expectant mothers to receive massage therapy treatments throughout their pregnancy. Give your mind the rest it needs and your body the care it deserves. Through massage therapy we can increase circulation in your legs and feet which will decrease swelling and also assist with leg cramping. Back massage will soothe the aching muscles in your lower back and hips as your hips are constantly changing throughout your entire pregnancy. Studies have also indicated that having massage therapy during pregnancy can help reduce anxiety and decrease symptoms of depression.

Massage is beneficial right up to the day that your precious little gift is born. Once they arrive your life is completely different. As a mother you already have this animal instinct to care for your baby in the best way you know how. You will compromise your posture to nurture your baby while you breastfeed or bottle feed. You will find which position works best for your baby to be held even if it is the most uncomfortable position for you. You will sleep different and have a semi-permanent fixture on your hip. Not to mention the car seat to carry.

So once you have settled a little with your wee one, let us take care of you and ease those aching muscles from all those awkward positions you never thought you would have to hold...but of course you do anyway because you are a Mom.

Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers and Mother’s to be!
