Is back pain interfering in your romantic life?

Dr. Shima Shahidy, (Hon) B.Sc., DC
Chiropractor, Acupuncture & Graston Technique Provider

dr shima shahidyAn unrealized consequence of chronic back pain can be a strain on personal relationships; an issue often neglected in conversation with the affected person's healthcare providers. This is a very difficult topic for most people to discuss with anyone. If you are experiencing this, please talk to any or all of your health care providers and we can provide you with some solutions to help you overcome these barriers.

When pain becomes chronic, it can affect your mood as well. Your level of interest in your partner, and your ability to control your emotions are affected. You may be prone to outbursts, get angry quickly or feel depressed. Pain can also affect your desire for intimacy and your physical tolerance for intimate activity.

The solutions range from hands on therapy such as massage and chiropractic, to counselling, exercise and nutrition. Each discipline will be able to offer you a different perspective to address the various aspects of the situation. A healthy relationship with your partner is just as important as being able to lift the laundry basket or vacuum.

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Kristine Haemel, RMT
Registered Massage Therapist

Kristine Haemel RMTSigns and symptoms of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome are brought on by a compression, irritation, or entrapment of the median nerve that runs between the carpal bones and passes through the wrist. This nerve affects the thumb, forefinger, middle finger, and half of the ring finger.

Some signs and symptoms of Carpet Tunnel Syndrome can include shooting pain, tingling, pins and needles, burning, numbness, and possible weakness in the part of the hand supplied by this nerve.

Individuals who are most likely to be affected are workers that use their hands and wrists repetitively for several hours, those that work in cold temperatures, and the obese.

Some examples include:
  • Computer users and typists
  • String musicians
  • Meat & fish packing industries
  • Assembly line workers
  • Checkout clerks
  • Janitors

Women with CTS (Carpel Tunnel Syndrome) outnumber men by 3 to 1 and this could be due to the smaller size of the wrist, hormonal changes or pregnancy.

Some helpful suggestions to avoid or minimize signs and symptoms of CTS include:

  • Being aware of your posture and hand position when lifting.
  • When on computers, your wrists should be held in a neutral position with forearms parallel to the floor.
  • If you are using a computer mouse, it should be placed so that the wrist, forearm and shoulder are positioned as above. The work space should be organized so the keyboard and mouse are directly in front of you to avoid working at awkward angles which greatly contributes to stress on the carpel tunnel.
  • Frequent breaks from repetitive activities or other aggravating conditions are encouraged.
  • Ice can be applied to the wrist and forearm during and after activity, to decrease any swelling or irritation. Contrast warm and cold application is great for flushing the affected area, making sure the temperature difference is at least 10 degrees to have a desired effect.
  • Frequent stretching of forearm flexors (diagram A), by extending the arm and using your other hand to pull the wrist into extension. Repeate the exercise for extensors (diagram B).
  • REST!!
  • Keeping your wrist in a neutral position requires less work from the supportive tissues.
  • Depending on the underlying factors, some CTS respond well to massage therapy treatment. Acuputure, chiropractic and osteopathic treatments may help as well.
  • Relaxation and stress reduction activities such as meditation, yoga or Tai Chi are recommended.
  • Splints (if required, are referred by a physician) may have to be worn temporarily or at night to help with restricting the wrist from moving into a flexed position and aggravating the carpel tunnel.

Fortunately for most people who have developed carpal tunnel syndrome, proper treatment can usually relieve the pain and numbness and restore normal use of their wrists and hands.
