Should I see a Chiropractor?

Dr. Shima Shahidy, (Hon) B.Sc., DC

dr shima shahidyBack pain is one of the leading reasons for seeking medical attention. 85% of the population will be afflicted with back pain at some point in their lives. There can be both personal and economical consequences. For many people, pain can keep them from work, school, or even their day-to-day activities. If left untreated, back pain will often resolve in two to six months. However, there is an 80% chance that your back pain will recur. Early diagnosis and treatment from a chiropractor can get you back on your feet and help prevent recurrence. Back pain is very common because it can be caused by so many things such as:

• Work-related injuries and car accidents
• Sports injuries
• Poor posture and stress
• Improper lifting

Any of these things can cause your spine to shift from its normal position or affect your range of motion. This results in pressure on the joints, muscles, and nerves in that area. Chiropractors are primary care providers and back care specialists. This means they can see you without a referral and far sooner than a medical specialist. More importantly, they can diagnose the cause of the back pain and refer you back to your family physician if your back pain is a symptom of an underlying disease.

back painWarning Signs for Potential Back Problems

• Leg pain with numbness, tingling and/or weakness
• Back or leg pain when coughing or sneezing
• Difficulty standing up after sitting for any period of time
• Stiffness in the morning that decreases once you move around
• Pain in your hip, buttock, thigh, knee, or foot
• Inability to turn or bend to each side equally
• Unbalanced posture, when your head, neck, or shoulder may be higher on one side than the other
• Pain that prevents you from sleeping well
• Pain that persists or worsens after 48 hours

Chiropractors treat your back pain by addressing the cause of the pain and using a hands on approach to correct it. An adjustment, manual work on the muscles and exercises are often part of the treatment. It’s simple, and it works.

The Importance of Hydration after Massage Treatment

Jacki Higenbottam, RMT
Registered Massage Therapist

Jacki Higenbottam RMTIt is important to hydrate the body with water after a massage therapy session because it helps flush out any accumulated waste materials from within the muscle and soft tissues. This is especially important after having a deep tissue or lymphatic treatment as the massage stimulates circulation in the body while expressing salt, water and other minerals from the muscles. Circulation is designed to carry away waste materials generated by the cells. When you are properly hydrated, you provide the body with water that will help facilitate removal of these waste products which might otherwise lead to build up in muscle tissue leaving you with sore and achy muscles. The lymphathic system is important for carrying away these waste products for disposal.

Most importantly, you should drink water after a massage as massage treatments can be dehydrating. The manipulation of the muscle tissue actually depletes them of water, and moves the fluid in the interstitial spaces between the surrounding muscles. By drinking water you can rehydrate the muscle tissue thus reducing the potential for pain and soreness in the days that follow a treatment.
