The dreaded back to school commercials are getting us all ready for the inevitable. It's almost September and as you head off to the malls to get all the gear for your kids, please pay attention to the following tips when choosing their backpacks. Whenever I sit at a red light and watch kids crossing the street, I have to really control the urge to get out of the car and readjust their backpacks. All I can see is what it is doing to their spine and the future consequences of poor posture and heavy loads.

Choosing
The ideal bag for you is lightweight with thick padded shoulder straps. It should have multiple compartments for better load distribution as well as a waist strap. Compression straps which help pull the bag closer to the body are also a great addition.

Packing
Resist the urge to pack things "just in case". Take only what is needed. Speak to your child's teachers to determine what they need to have each day and what can be left at school. A fully loaded backpack should not be more than 10-15% of the child's total body weight.

Lifting
Teach your child to bend their knees and not their back when lifting their backpack from the ground. The best way to put the bag on is to place it on a surface that is waist height and then slip it on one strap at a time.

Wearing
Both shoulder straps should be used to prevent strain on any one side. The waist strap should be used for stability. Most importantly, it should feel comfortable. We all have different body shapes and kids should try on a backpack to make sure the straps don't cut into their neck and that it fits their body.

I'll be happy to help fit your child’s backpack and speak to them about proper use and good posture. Let’s prevent the pain before it starts!

The Stiletto: Is it worth the pain?

Andrea Nederveen, RMT
Registered Massage Therapist

andrea nederveen RMTThe stiletto is a staple in any woman’s wardrobe. We love how they make our legs look long, lean and toned, and how they add power and confidence to our walk. We love how we instantly get taller and how they complete an outfit so perfectly. We feel beautiful when we wear our heels.

However…beauty does not come without a price. How often are we complaining about sore feet and a sore back after a day or night of wearing them? How often do we jam our poor little feet into a pointed toe with a 4 inch heel for the sake of fashion?

Most women do not realize the effects heels can have on their bodies. Raising your heel in a shoe changes and weakens the ankle joint, shortens the calf muscles and puts extra pressure on the knee joints. It also tilts your pelvis, throwing your center of gravity forward, and creates a curve in your low back. You may feel like your body is straight, but anatomically it is way off.  Over time heels can also cause pain in your feet in the form of hammer toe, bunions or plantar fasciitis.

I am not saying to rid your closets of your beautiful shoes, or to never wear heels to work again. I would suggest however that the next time you reach into your closet for your favorite pair of Jimmy Choos, perhaps you may want to think about where you are going and opt for a stylish pair of flats instead. Your body will thank you for it!
