The Brave Men who do Yoga!

I am grateful to have some of the most fabulous people as my patients. I enjoy seeing them and talking with them about their lives. Most importantly, I want them to learn how to heal themselves and change the source of their discomfort or pain. Our goal is to do more than simply put a band-aid on the symptom, but rather we want to remove the underlying reason for it. This is why after we have dealt with the acute pain or injury, we always discuss how to maintain and improve body function. Lifestyle change, diet and exercise are always going to be part of that discussion as well as chiropractic care.
Exercises involving Yoga and Pilates lend themselves very well to treating many of the common injuries and dysfunctions I deal with in practice. When done properly, they can strengthen the core, build endurance into the spinal stabilizing muscles and help decrease stress amongst other things. Getting men to go to Yoga classes is…..difficult. There are so many reasons why they won’t go but when they finally do, they almost always come back and say, “I can’t believe I didn’t do this before!”
Why do I recommend Yoga? Well, I wasn’t always a believer myself but thought it was probably a good thing to do, right up there with flossing, but I didn’t think I’d like it. I have a martial arts background and I like fast exercise. Yoga seemed boring - then I tried a class or two and I was hooked! What appealed to me about Yoga was that it was like martial arts and chiropractic…it is something you “practice.” This means that you are constantly repeating, improving and growing. You can be as hard core or as hands off as you like with your practice but no doubt you will find some benefit. There are so many varieties of Yoga that if you are willing to try a class or two, I am convinced you will find something to suit you.
Below is a letter written by one our patients Matt who took the leap and has not turned back! He had improvement with chiropractic care but he was always talking about how stressed he was. It was apparent that something else needed to change…
The Benefits of Yoga - By Matt
12 months ago I started seeing Dr Shima with upper back and shoulder issues. I was in a great deal of discomfort at the time and Dr Shima did her best to relieve some of the tension in my back and shoulder. I was initially seeing Dr Shima twice a week and became quite willing to try anything that might give me some relief. After being “threatened” with acupuncture I decide to give Yoga a try, which Dr Shima recommended to me in earlier visits.
Initially I wasn’t too keen on trying yoga. I didn’t really see myself as a tree hugging granola eating hippie type, but if it brought some relief I’d give it a try. On my initial visit I found the instructors very accommodating and willing to tailor their class to assist with any discomfort I was experiencing.
After about a month of attending yoga twice weekly, I started to notice a real difference in my back. I was starting to become supple and through specific yoga stretches I could relieve some of the discomfort I had experienced in the past.
At about the 8 week point I had reduced my visits to Dr Shima to about 2 a month, a huge difference from 8 a month; I was starting to become more flexible, and gaining a stronger core which helped with my posture.
3 months in I noticed something else, I was a lot less stressed which in turn reduced my back and shoulder pain. The relaxing and breathing techniques I had learned in yoga, I found I could apply to everyday life both at work and home. Stressful situations at work seemed much more manageable, and although taking care of two little kids at home can at times be quite challenging, it became much more enjoyable. My outlook, composure and attitude seemed to be all changing for the better.
As I write this today, I have moved on to a more challenging yoga class and also enjoy yogalates (which, as the name suggests, is a combination of yoga and Pilates) focusing on stretching and core strengthening which I find helps with my back.
I still visit Dr Shima a couple of times a month to help adjust that difficult spot that yoga might not reach, but my back, shoulder, health and overall outlook on life has improved tenfold. So.....call me a tree hugging granola eating hippie if you like, I am completely hooked on yoga!
