Research confirms that chiropractic treatment and exercise are superior to drugs for neck pain

Dr. Shima Shahidy, (Hon) B.Sc., DC
Chiropractor, Acupuncture & Graston Technique Provider

dr shima shahidyA recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine divided neck pain patients into 3 groups to determine which type of therapy was more effective in relieving the pain and keeping it away. One group received spinal manipulative therapy (adjustments) from a doctor of chiropractic, the second group received pain medication (muscle relaxants, narcotics or over the counter pain relievers) and the third group received advice on exercise.

After 12 weeks, 48% of the exercise group and 57% of the chiropractic group reported a 75% decrease in pain compared to only 33% of the medication group. After 12 months, 53% of the participants in the exercise and chiropractic group still reported a 75% decrease in pain versus 38% of those who took medication. The study also showed that those in the medication group continued to use higher amounts of the pain relievers more frequently.

Mechanical neck pain affects 70% of people at some point and there has been very little research done to guide the course of care. In practice, I often see patients who have already been prescribed pain killers or are taking over the counter medicines for neck pain and muscle soreness. For this type of pain, a course of regular chiropractic care coupled with simple stretches and postural advice can be extremely beneficial in the short and long term without the side effects that come with overuse of OTC and prescription pain killers.

If I donít start small, I will not start at all

Andrea Antaya, RMT, Dipl. S.T.
Registered Massage Therapist, Shiatsu Therapist & Reiki Practitioner

The beginning of the New Year is a time when many of us are taking stock and looking at our resolutions. I learned a long time ago that if I don’t start small, I will not start at all.  It is always good to have a goal – just be sure that how you achieve that goal is realistic. andrea antaya

Many people ask about yoga, tai chi and meditation as a means of decreasing stress after the holidays. All of the above are beneficial. Try a beginner’s class first and let the instructor know if you have any health concerns. To start, I suggest setting aside 10 minutes a day for something simple like stretching, breathing exercises or a basic meditation. A stretching plan can be given by your Massage Therapist and easily increased or adjusted over time. It is recommended that Massage be done on a regular basis as this will help decrease the chances of injury. As well, it will keep your muscles loose when starting a new exercise plan.

Below is a wonderfully simple meditation exercise that can help start your day on a positive note. Pick a time of day that works best for you. If you choose mornings, try to have a shower first so you are awake and alert! Find a quiet spot on the floor with a pillow or a chair if you prefer. I prefer the floor as it helps me feel more grounded. Dress so your body is a comfortable temperature. Start by saying this meditation aloud a few times and then repeat it in your head.

May I be safe,
May I be peaceful,
May I be healthy,
May I have ease.

Repeat this 5 times and then switch “I” to the name of someone you know. It can be a friend or a family member, anyone you would like to send positive energy to. Repeat this 5 times.

The next stage includes changing the name to someone that you may find bothersome or hard to get along with. This can help let go of any negative attachments and change them to something more beneficial like a feeling of kindness. Repeat  5 times.

The last part of this meditation is to send energy to someone you do not know very well. Perhaps someone you were standing in line with at the grocery store or passed in the hall. You can use the word “they” and try to have an image of this person in your mind. Repeat 5 times.

This may sound complicated at first but I promise once you can repeat the 4 lines by heart, it goes quickly. You can increase the reps to as many as you have time for and add as many people, places or animals as you like!
