Reconsidering a low carb diet

samantha ristimakiSummer is just around the corner and already retail shops are filled with latest fashion trends of the season. For some women, spring is the time when you start to think about shedding any weight you may have gained over the cold winter months as you will soon be unable to hide under the comfort of a bulky sweater. Before you throw yourself onto a low-carb diet in search of quick results, consider that your quick fix may not be the best long term choice for your body.

Reduced Ability to Think
Brain cells are very unique relative to other cells in the human body. Not only do they require twice the energy of any other cell in the body but their only fuel source is a carbohydrate building block known as glucose. Low-carb diets not only starve the brain but studies have shown that carb restriction can have a negative affect on your memory.

Bad Breath
When your body does not have carbohydrates to use as a primary source of fuel, it starts digesting your body’s own fat and muscle. It is very common for a low-carb dieter to have breath that smells like a cross between nail polish and over-ripe pineapple. Because it is a result of the body’s own metabolic processes, no amount of brushing, rinsing or gum chewing will improve it.

Poor Digestive Health and Constipation
In order to maintain healthy bowel function you need to include an adequate amount of fibre. Without it, the body cannot eliminate wastes properly increasing your risk for colon cancer, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids and other diseases.

Heart Disease Risk Increases
Despite the short term weight loss, studies have shown that people on a low-carb diet actually develop higher LDL or “bad” cholesterol levels relative to their high carb diet counterparts. Higher meat and lower fiber intake dramatically increases homocysteine levels which can increase the risk of heart disease.

Long Term Weight Gain
You may shed a few extra pounds the first few weeks but the reality is that weight loss over time is the result of reducing your caloric intake. It actually throws your body into starvation mode making you more likely to gain weight later when you re-introduce carbohydrates. Realistically speaking, it is difficult to maintain for a lifetime and makes you much more likely to binge on high sugar and high fat foods later.

A wise woman once said, “if you go on a diet to lose weight, you are likely to find it again later”. Choose to simply balance and maintain a healthy lifestyle and you’ll have long term success in dropping those unwanted pounds for good.

A time for change

dr shima shahidySummer is coming and we're about to get rid of the bulky clothes and start enjoying the outdoors. Perhaps you are looking for a way to start a lifestyle change but are feeling overwhelmed. Do you want to be healthier, lose weight or start exercising? Try these easy tips just to get yourself (mind and body) ready for the change in a gradual and sustainable way.

1) Drink a glass of warm or hot water mixed with lemon first thing in the morning. This is a gentle way to wake up the body and lemon possesses vitamin C which is essential to healing and resisting infection.

2) Eat breakfast. "Break Fast" because that is exactly what you are doing, your body is hungry after 7-9 hours of sleep so it needs to be fed! There are so many benefits to doing this. First, you're forced to be organized, go to bed early and get up early to do this. Make it a family ritual and do this together every morning to teach your children a wonderful lifelong habit. It will keep you from wanting to grab that donut in the staff room because you will be full and it will kick start your metabolism.

3) Eat fist sized snacks and you can't go wrong. Even if you've been unable to cut out all of your bad snacking habits, reducing your portion sizes will make a world of difference. 

4) Move! Start by devoting at least 15 minutes a day to something active and build up from that. Go for a walk, a swim, a bike ride, take the stairs up and down, play basketball, stretch and do it "just because." Devoted exercise time is different than having an active job. It's about taking time for yourself, breathing deeply and decreasing stress. Looking for ideas? Try http://www.fitin15.ca/

5) Drink more water and eat more vegetables. Even if you have not reduced or eliminated all the foods that may be hindering your health and wellness goals, this will start you on the right track. Cut up vegetables when you have time and put them in containers so all you have to do is grab one and go in the morning. Take a re-usable water bottle with you everywhere so you can always have water (glass or stainless steel is best). 

It's always a good time to change, set new goals and start better habits. Don't get discouraged and just do your best!

dr shima shahidyAs many of you are aware, I’ll be getting married in June and therefore I will be away for approximately two weeks from June 18 to July 3, returning to work on July 4th. A wonderful colleague and close friend, Dr. Newsha Kashani will be covering for me during that time. Please take the time to read her biography and I encourage you to take advantage of chiropractic services while she is here. She has had training in all the same techniques that I offer and therefore will offer you the same quality of care. I want to thank you all for the great conversations, advice and well wishes over the last year as I’ve been planning the wedding and I look forward to coming back in July for a great summer!
 
Dr. Newsha H. Kashani, Hon. BSc, DC

Dr. Newsha H. Kashani received her undergraduate training at McMaster University, where she earned an Honours Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Life Sciences. She then went on to complete an additional 4 years of chiropractic training at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in Toronto, where she graduated from in 2008 with clinic honours. Dr. Kashani is also certified in Clinical Acupuncture through the Acupuncture Council of Ontario which aims to combine contemporary medical acupuncture with core Traditional Chinese Medicine theory.

In addition to the above training, Dr. Kashani also obtained certification in Graston Technique Therapy, an innovative form of instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization. Dr. Kashani has extensive experience with working in a clinical setting during her studies, and is an active member of the Canadian and Ontario Chiropractic Associations and the College of Chiropractors of Ontario.
