Your sunscreen may be doing you more harm than good

samantha ristimakiEach year over one million people in North America are diagnosed with skin cancer!

Although being in the sun can be great for vitamin D production, too much sun can be problematic over time.  Soaking up the sun exposes the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, some of which is naturally reflected by the skin but the rest is absorbed by living cells.  The absorbed UV damages cells causing sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer.

Most people slather on sunscreen or sunblock with good intentions to help protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays.  The problem is, not all sun protection products are created equally.  There are a lot more things to consider besides sun protection factor (SPF) when choosing a sunscreen.  

Does it protect from both UVA & UVB radiation? 
Is it actually chemically stable in sunlight? 
Do any of the ingredients have any known or suspected health hazards?

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) in Washington DC recognized the need for scientific analysis of sun protection products.  They analysed 1,085 products on the market with information compiled from studies, toxicity information and product formulations to rank them for safety and effectiveness.

Only 15% of 1,085 products analyzed met criteria for safety and effectiveness!

Some of the worst offenders are Coppertone, Banana Boat and Neutragena.

What they found….

Products lacked UVA protection
7% of products did not contain ingredients that would help shield the body from UVA.  Long term exposure to this type of long wave radiation is linked with skin cancer.

They couldn’t stand up to the sun
44% of products contained ingredients that may be unstable in the sun making it questionable as to whether they will actually last as long as they claim to.

Ingredients may be linked with skin cancer
Most commercial sunscreens contain oxybenzone.  It absorbs UVA & UVB rays.  The problem is that now it is actually thought to cause some forms of skin cancer!

Wellness for the Body is pleased to introduce our newest staff member and counsellor, Nadine Furbacher, BBA, BA, MACP (Candidate).

Nadine has been counselling in a professional and volunteer capacity for over 10 years. Starting with a human resources perspective for two large corporations, she counselled employees for a variety of related contexts over the course of five years. Using her empathetic ear and open door policy, Nadine’s passion for supporting others by listening, affirming and empowering them, flourished into a true love of counselling.

Since 2006 she has been a crisis counsellor with Distress Centre Niagara, trained in active listening, crisis intervention and suicide CPR assessment. She counsels clients who are coping with major life change, physical/emotional disabilities, troubled lifestyles and behavioural concerns. She has experience assessing mental health conditions such as: anxiety, depression, bi polar disorder, trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder and other sources of stress. While working for a year in social services, Nadine was a support and social maintenance counsellor for people living with epilepsy. She also specialized as a group facilitator for young students, teaching them seizure first aid; empathy; and building awareness about the condition.

Nadine is a firm believer in social equity and has specialized training in gender, sexuality, and diverse lifestyles. She strives for a client-focused, goal oriented, therapeutic relationship with each person she sessions with. She has strong ethics and boundaries, holding above all that people are organic, holistic beings – each deserving of quality life experiences, with the capacity to grow, develop and meet personal goals.

Nadine’s educational background is exceptional, providing a well rounded outlook on lifestyles, career and mental wellness. From Brock University, she holds a BA in Psychology, and an honours BBA in Business, with a minor in Women Studies. At present she is specializing in psychotherapy, completing her MA in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. She has applied for graduation early 2010.

Improve Your Workout with Massage Therapy

Did you know that massage therapy can help improve your workout? Massage can do wonders for the fitness enthusiast; helping to improve performance, decrease recovery time, improve circulation, increase flexibility, and reduce muscle strain and injury.

What Happens When You Exercise?

Regular exercise increases vigor, promotes a general sense of well-being, helps relieve the effects of stress, increases muscle strength and endurance, makes your heart and lungs more efficient, improves flexibility, among other benefits!

These positive changes occur as the body gradually adapts to the greater demands put on it by regular exercise. As you push your physical limits, you may experience stiffness and soreness. Delayed muscle soreness (24-48 hours after exercise) can be caused by minor muscle or connective tissue damage, local muscle spasms that reduce blood flow, or a build up of waste products from energy production, mainly lactic acid. Tiny tears in muscle and connective tissue is essential for building bigger, stronger muscles and is also the reason why weight training should only be done every other day. This allows the muscle proper healing time to ensure it functions at its maximum performance capacity.

Heavily exercised muscles that are not stretched regularly can become chronically tight and lose flexibility. Lack of flexibility leads to muscle soreness, and predisposes you to injuries, especially muscle pulls and tears. Tight muscles also impede blood flow, which can cause pain or numbness and tingling.

How Massage Helps

Massage therapy helps your body recover from the stresses of strenuous exercise.

  • Massage relaxes muscles, improves joint mobility and range of motion, and promotes flexibility. Relaxed muscles move more easily, which gives you increased power, performance, and efficiency.
  • Massage relieves muscle aches and stiffness and decreases post-workout muscle soreness. Waste products such as lactic and carbonic acid build up in muscles after exercise. Massage increases circulation to muscles, which helps to eliminate toxic debris and shorten recovery time between workouts.
  • Massage breaks up scar tissue and adhesions (stuck-together soft tissue) by stretching connective tissue and improving circulation. Scar tissue and adhesions reduce movement potential and increase the possibility of injury.
  • Massage prevents injuries that might be caused by stressing unbalanced muscle groups or by favoring or forcing a painful, restricted area. You are also less likely to injure strong, mobile tissue.
  • Massage keeps trouble spots from becoming a problem. You may have you own unique trouble spots, perhaps from past injuries or repetitive activities such as spending hours at a computer. Massage can give special attention to these areas, monitor them for developing problems, and help keep them in good condition.

The Bottom Line - Massage and Exercise

Massage improves blood and lymph circulation and relaxes muscles. These in turn lead to removal of waste products and better cell nutrition, greater elasticity of tissues, and faster healing of injuries. It all adds up to relief from soreness and stiffness, better flexibility, and less potential for future injury.

Massage decreases pain and increases flexibility. If you have no pain and the ability to stretch further, you have the ability to increase strength, power, and endurance by allowing your muscles to work proficiently and properly.

Massage can be an important addition to your exercise program, helping you achieve your performance goals with minimum injury and pain. After training, a massage will help you recover faster, flushing out the built up toxins in the muscles.

Ideally, getting a massage once a week is optimal, supporting your fitness or sports program, improving flexibility and range of motion, relieving tired and sore muscles, and speeding recovery from strenuous physical exertion.
