Depression in Women

Dr. Samantha Ristimaki, BSc, ND
Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine

samantha ristimakiWomen suffer from depression twice as much as their male counterparts.

Life is full of ups and downs but depression can make those lows seem insurmountable. Women often suffer from role strain as a result of conflicting and overwhelming responsibilities in their lives. Social pressures however may not be the only explanation for the higher depression rates: biological differences may play a fundamental role in making women more likely to suffer from the blues.

Your brain chemicals may be taking a beating

1) Premenstrual Changes: PMS affects the majority of women. Of those affected, 25-35% suffer from depression that occurs after ovulation. There is often a drop in serotonin, the mood-regulating hormone, a week or two before menstruation. A drop in thyroid hormones during this same time period can also trigger symptoms.

2) The Pill: Oral contraceptives may also trigger depression in the same biochemical way that PMS will. Pills that are higher in progesterone are most likely to have a negative effect.

3) Infertility treatments: As if the stress of seeking fertility care wasn't enough, treatments that involve gonadotropins can have a significant impact on mood hormones.

4) Hypothyroidism: Women are more likely to suffer from hypothyroidism. The main symptoms associated with it include fatigue, weight gain and depression.

5) Perimenopause and Menopause: Women can start going through perimenopause in their early 40's and it can last for 10 or more years. The unpredictable fluctuations in reproductive hormones can trigger unexplainable blues.

If depression is suspected, it is important to rule out that it is not caused by a side effect of medication such as birth control. Also be sure that thyroid disease is ruled out. Since women tend to suffer from more side effects of antidepressant because of differences in fat composition, it's important to only resort to medication when it is truly indicated.

One of the oldest healing practices in the world: Acupuncture

Dr. Shima Shahidy, (Hon) B.Sc., DC
Chiropractor & Graston Technique Provider shima shahidy DC

Acupuncture restores health by stimulating certain points on the body. This stimulation is most often achieved through the insertion of thin metallic needles. With its origins in Asia, acupuncture is a major part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is practiced as an adjunct by many other health professionals such as chiropractors, naturopaths, physiotherapists and massage therapists to name a few. Many are familiar with the concept of Yin and Yang which are opposite and opposing forces in nature. Health is achieved through the balance of these forces whereas disease stems from imbalance which can block the flow of life’s vital energy or “Qi” (pronounced Chi).  Needle insertion in acupuncture points is one method used to balance the Qi.

Chiropractors often use acupuncture points to treat anything from back pain, leg pain, tennis elbow, neck and upper back pain as well as headaches, arthritis, and chronic pain disorders just to name a few. Acupuncture is used rather effectively alone or in combination with chiropractic treatment.

In your first visit, the doctor will often ask you about your health history, illnesses, medications, lifestyle and the nature of your current condition. Every patient will experience the treatment differently however most feel little to no pain with the insertion of the very thin acupuncture needles. Some will feel heaviness, pressure, energy or relaxation. It is standard to have treatment over several weeks for a particular condition.

What makes acupuncture such a desirable treatment is not only its effectiveness which has now been proven for many conditions and continues to be researched, but also the fact that there are very few complications. Safe needle techniques are adhered to in order to avoid infections and other adverse effects.

I am pleased to be able to offer acupuncture as part of my treatment at Wellness for the Body. Whether you are already under care here or new to our clinic, please feel free to talk to me about whether acupuncture may be beneficial to you.

The 2009 Oakville Awards for Business Excellence Gala

My Personal Experience - Jennifer Lickver, Clinic Director

clinic directorOn Thursday, April 2, 2009 it was my honour to attend my very first Oakville Awards for Business Excellence Gala. It was a brilliant affair at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre, with its lights shinning, tables set, stage centered, fine food and great company included.

We were seated at table 48 along with two other small business owners creating the odd combination of a wellness centre, vegetarian organic food inventor, and a butcher shop owner. Our table was filled with happy and sociable people. We were all grateful to call ourselves nominees.

At one point in the evening, all nominees were to make their way on stage for the award presentations. Nervous as anything I completely forgot my previously told instructions, missed the white carpet, and instead (hopefully discreetly) simply added myself to the far edge of the stage. No huge embarrassment, I didn't even think anyone would notice. I'll hang onto this hope, even though everyone at my table seemed to have good memory of my "stage adlib".

All in all, I had a wonderful time and will definitely be attending next year. Wellness for the Body was honoured and proud to be a part of an event recognizing great companies in Oakville. A special thanks to all our wonderful devoted clients, who are an integral part of Wellness for the Body and what we have become over the last three and a half years.
